Good and Harmful Tendencies

Krishna lists the good qualities: fearlessness, honesty, kindness, self-control, patience, forgiveness. He also lists the harmful ones: pride, anger, harshness, greed. He names three gates that destroy a person: desire, anger and greed. He tells Arjuna not to worry, since he was born with the good qualities.

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
abhayaṁ sattva-sanśhuddhir jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ
dānaṁ damaśh cha yajñaśh cha svādhyāyas tapa ārjavam

Krishna says: Fearlessness, a clean heart, steady pursuit of knowledge, giving, self-control, doing your duty, study, discipline and honesty,

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins a list of good qualities for Arjuna: fearlessness, a clean heart, giving, self-control, honesty and learning. The point is that these are strengths anyone can grow. Try one today, like staying honest in a small matter at work even when a little lie would be easier.

ahinsā satyam akrodhas tyāgaḥ śhāntir apaiśhunam
dayā bhūteṣhv aloluptvaṁ mārdavaṁ hrīr achāpalam

non-violence, truth, freedom from anger, letting go, calm, not speaking ill of others, kindness to all beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty and steadiness,

What Krishna meant

Krishna continues the list: non-violence, truth, no anger, calm, kindness to all, no greed, gentleness and modesty. The one that matters most day to day is kindness. Next time someone at home annoys you, pause and answer softly instead of sharply. Small gentle replies keep families peaceful.

tejaḥ kṣhamā dhṛitiḥ śhaucham adroho nāti-mānitā
bhavanti sampadaṁ daivīm abhijātasya bhārata

strength of character, forgiveness, patience, cleanliness, not harming anyone and not being too proud: these belong to one born with a divine nature, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna finishes the list: strong character, forgiveness, patience, cleanliness and no pride. He says these belong to a person with a godly nature. The easiest to try is forgiveness. If a friend let you down, letting go of the grudge lightens your own heart more than theirs.

dambho darpo ’bhimānaśh cha krodhaḥ pāruṣhyam eva cha
ajñānaṁ chābhijātasya pārtha sampadam āsurīm

Showing off, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness and ignorance belong to one born with a demonic nature, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna now names the opposite habits: showing off, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness and not knowing better. He is not scolding anyone, only pointing out what pulls us down. For example, bragging in a meeting may win a moment of praise but loses people's trust over time.

daivī sampad vimokṣhāya nibandhāyāsurī matā
mā śhuchaḥ sampadaṁ daivīm abhijāto ’si pāṇḍava

The divine nature leads to freedom, and the demonic to bondage. Do not worry, Arjuna, you were born with the divine nature.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says good qualities lead to freedom, and harsh ones lead to being tied down. Then he comforts Arjuna: do not worry, you have the good nature in you. When you feel you are not good enough, remember this. You already carry kindness and courage, so build on them.

dvau bhūta-sargau loke ’smin daiva āsura eva cha
daivo vistaraśhaḥ prokta āsuraṁ pārtha me śhṛiṇu

There are two kinds of people in this world: the divine and the demonic. I have described the divine at length. Now hear about the demonic.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says people broadly show two tendencies: the gentle, good one and the harsh, selfish one. He has finished describing the good one and now explains the other, so that Arjuna can recognise it. Seeing these habits clearly, even in ourselves, is the first step to changing them.

Demonic people do not know what to do and what to avoid. They have no purity, no good conduct and no truth.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that people with the harsh, selfish tendency lose their sense of what is right and wrong, and are not clean in conduct or truthful. Example: someone who cheats a customer for quick profit no longer even feels it is wrong. Krishna invites us to keep our inner compass working.

asatyam apratiṣhṭhaṁ te jagad āhur anīśhvaram
aparaspara-sambhūtaṁ kim anyat kāma-haitukam

They say the world is unreal, without a foundation and without God, made by nothing but desire.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes the thinking of such people: the world has no meaning, no order, nothing greater than us, and is run only by wanting. This view makes people careless about others. The useful lesson: if you ever think nothing matters, pause, because that thought often justifies hurting someone.

etāṁ dṛiṣhṭim avaṣhṭabhya naṣhṭātmāno ’lpa-buddhayaḥ
prabhavanty ugra-karmāṇaḥ kṣhayāya jagato ’hitāḥ

Holding this view, these lost people of small understanding and cruel deeds rise up as enemies, to destroy the world.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that people who hold this view, with small understanding and cruel acts, end up harming the world around them. Think of a workplace where one person only cares for himself: everyone suffers. Krishna reminds us that our choices reach other people too.

kāmam āśhritya duṣhpūraṁ dambha-māna-madānvitāḥ
mohād gṛihītvāsad-grāhān pravartante ’śhuchi-vratāḥ

Relying on endless desire, full of pride and arrogance, holding wrong beliefs out of confusion, they pursue impure goals.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says some people are driven by endless wants, pride and wrong ideas, and so chase goals that are not clean. For example, someone may chase promotion by pushing others down. Krishna's quiet advice is to check whether what we want is worth the way we are getting it.

chintām aparimeyāṁ cha pralayāntām upāśhritāḥ
kāmopabhoga-paramā etāvad iti niśhchitāḥ

They carry endless worry that lasts until death, and they believe that satisfying desires is the highest goal, and that this is all there is.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says such people carry worry until the end of life, believing that enjoying pleasures is the only aim. When all you chase is the next pleasure, stress never ends because there is always more to want. Krishna points to peace as the better goal.

16.12

āśhā-pāśha-śhatair baddhāḥ kāma-krodha-parāyaṇāḥ
īhante kāma-bhogārtham anyāyenārtha-sañchayān

Tied by hundreds of ropes of hope and driven by desire and anger, they try to pile up wealth unfairly to enjoy their pleasures.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that hundreds of hopes tie people up, and anger and desire drive them to collect money unfairly. Think of someone working all night on shady deals, never at rest. The lesson: earn honestly, and your sleep stays peaceful.

idam adya mayā labdham imaṁ prāpsye manoratham
idam astīdam api me bhaviṣhyati punar dhanam

"I have got this today, and I will fulfil this wish. This is mine, and I will have more wealth too."

What Krishna meant

Krishna shows the inner talk of a greedy mind: I got this today, I will get that next, this is mine and more will be mine. The mind is never satisfied. A simple habit helps: at the end of the day, name three things you already have and feel thankful.

asau mayā hataḥ śhatrur haniṣhye chāparān api
īśhvaro ’ham ahaṁ bhogī siddho ’haṁ balavān sukhī

"I have killed that enemy and I will kill the others too. I am the master, the enjoyer, successful, strong and happy."

What Krishna meant

Krishna goes on with the proud person's thoughts: I beat that rival, I will beat the others, I am the boss and the happy one. Winning over others becomes the whole point. Krishna's hint is that rivalry and ego leave a person lonely, so try cheering for a colleague's success instead.

āḍhyo ’bhijanavān asmi ko ’nyo ’sti sadṛiśho mayā
yakṣhye dāsyāmi modiṣhya ity ajñāna-vimohitāḥ
aneka-chitta-vibhrāntā moha-jāla-samāvṛitāḥ
prasaktāḥ kāma-bhogeṣhu patanti narake ’śhuchau

"I am rich and born in a good family. Who is equal to me? I will perform rituals, I will give, I will enjoy." Thus they speak, confused by ignorance.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the proud person thinks: I am rich, from a good family, who is my equal? Such talk comes from ignorance. Real worth is not in money or family name but in how we treat people. If you catch yourself comparing, try asking one humble question to someone today.

aneka-citta-vibhrāntā moha-jāla-samāvṛtāḥ prasaktāḥ kāma-bhogeṣu patanti narake 'śucau

Their minds spin in many directions, they are caught in a net of confusion, and attached to pleasures, they fall into an impure hell.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a mind pulled in many directions and tangled in confusion gets stuck in attachment to pleasures and ends up in a miserable state. Today we call it being overwhelmed. When your mind scatters, write down one thing to do next and do just that.

ātma-sambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ
yajante nāma-yajñais te dambhenāvidhi-pūrvakam

Self-important, stubborn, full of pride in wealth and honour, they perform only name-sake rituals out of show, without following the proper way.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that people full of self-importance, stubborn and proud of wealth, may do religious acts only for show. A prayer or donation done to impress others loses its meaning. Do your good deeds quietly, like helping a neighbour without telling anyone.

ahankāraṁ balaṁ darpaṁ kāmaṁ krodhaṁ cha sanśhritāḥ
mām ātma-para-deheṣhu pradviṣhanto ’bhyasūyakāḥ

Relying on ego, force, pride, desire and anger, these jealous people hate me in their own bodies and in others.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that ego, force, pride, desire and anger make people jealous and unkind to others and to the good within themselves. Jealousy at a friend's success hurts mainly you. Krishna suggests replacing it with a simple wish: may you do well too.

tān ahaṁ dviṣhataḥ krūrān sansāreṣhu narādhamān
kṣhipāmy ajasram aśhubhān āsurīṣhv eva yoniṣhu

Those cruel haters, the lowest of people, I keep throwing again and again into demonic births in this cycle of rebirth.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that cruel hatred keeps people stuck in the same harsh patterns, life after life. Read simply, a person who keeps acting from hate keeps landing in the same painful situations. The way out is a small change of habit, such as answering an insult with silence.

āsurīṁ yonim āpannā mūḍhā janmani janmani
mām aprāpyaiva kaunteya tato yānty adhamāṁ gatim

Falling into demonic births, birth after birth, the confused do not reach me, Arjuna, and so they go down to the lowest state.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that those stuck in such confused ways move further from what is good and sink lower and lower. He is describing a downward slide, not announcing a punishment. Any habit repeated grows stronger, so stop a bad habit early, like snapping at others, before it settles in.

tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśhanam ātmanaḥ
kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet

Desire, anger and greed are the three gates of hell that destroy the self. So one should give up these three.

What Krishna meant

Krishna names three doors that wreck a person: desire, anger and greed, and says to leave all three. Pick one for yourself. If anger is yours, count to ten before replying. A small pause often saves a relationship that one angry sentence could damage.

etair vimuktaḥ kaunteya tamo-dvārais tribhir naraḥ
ācharaty ātmanaḥ śhreyas tato yāti parāṁ gatim

A person freed from these three gates of darkness, Arjuna, does what is good for the self, and then reaches the highest goal.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a person who gets free of these three, desire, anger and greed, starts doing what is truly good for them and moves toward the highest peace. Think of how light you feel after letting go of a grudge. That lightness is the direction Krishna points to.

One who ignores the guidance of scripture and acts on whim does not find success, happiness or the highest goal.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that one who ignores good guidance and just does whatever he feels like does not find real success or happiness. Acting only on mood is like driving without a map. Before a big decision, ask a trusted elder or read something wise, then decide.

tasmāch chhāstraṁ pramāṇaṁ te kāryākārya-vyavasthitau
jñātvā śhāstra-vidhānoktaṁ karma kartum ihārhasi

So let the scriptures be your guide in deciding what to do and what not to do. Knowing what they say, you should act accordingly here.

What Krishna meant

Krishna closes the chapter by telling Arjuna to let wise teachings guide what to do and what to avoid, and then act on them. When you are unsure, look to good teachings and honest advice. Knowing is only half the job; the other half is doing it.
