Three Kinds of Faith

Our faith, food, giving and effort each come in three kinds, following the three qualities. Krishna describes good habits of body, speech and mind: respect for elders and teachers, cleanliness, speaking truthfully and kindly, and keeping the mind peaceful. A gift is best when given with no expectation, to someone in need, at the right time.

arjuna uvācha
ye śhāstra-vidhim utsṛijya yajante śhraddhayānvitāḥ
teṣhāṁ niṣhṭhā tu kā kṛiṣhṇa sattvam āho rajas tamaḥ

Arjuna asks: Krishna, what is the state of those who worship with faith but ignore scripture's rules? Is it goodness, passion or darkness?

What Krishna meant

Arjuna asks Krishna about people who have faith but do not follow the old rules: is their faith good, restless or dull? He wants to know how sincere people can be understood. The lesson: sincerity matters, and it helps to ask honest questions when you are unsure, as Arjuna does.

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
tri-vidhā bhavati śhraddhā dehināṁ sā svabhāva-jā
sāttvikī rājasī chaiva tāmasī cheti tāṁ śhṛiṇu

Krishna says: Faith is of three kinds, born from one's own nature: good, passionate and dark. Listen.

What Krishna meant

Krishna answers that everyone has some faith, and it comes in three kinds: calm and good, restless and eager, or dull and heavy. These come from one's own nature. Notice which kind is strongest in you today, for instance whether you work from calm interest or from restless worry.

sattvānurūpā sarvasya śhraddhā bhavati bhārata
śhraddhā-mayo ‘yaṁ puruṣho yo yach-chhraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ

Everyone's faith follows their inner nature, Arjuna. A person is made of faith: whatever one's faith is, that is what one is.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a person's faith matches their nature, and a person is shaped by what they believe in. If you believe you can learn, you try; if you believe you always fail, you stop. So choose your beliefs about yourself carefully.

yajante sāttvikā devān yakṣha-rakṣhānsi rājasāḥ
pretān bhūta-gaṇānśh chānye yajante tāmasā janāḥ

People in goodness worship the gods, people in passion worship powerful beings, and people in darkness worship ghosts and spirits.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that what people look up to and honour reflects their inner mood: calm people turn to what is noble, restless ones to power, and heavy-minded ones to dark things. It is a mirror, not a judgment. Ask yourself whom you admire, since that shows what you value.

aśhāstra-vihitaṁ ghoraṁ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ
dambhāhankāra-sanyuktāḥ kāma-rāga-balānvitāḥ

Those who do terrible austerities not recommended by scripture, full of show and ego, driven by desire and attachment,

What Krishna meant

Krishna talks about people who take on harsh self-denial that no wise teaching asks for, out of show, ego and desire. Pushing yourself to look tough helps nobody. Example: skipping rest or meals to impress others at work only wears you down.

karṣhayantaḥ śharīra-sthaṁ bhūta-grāmam achetasaḥ
māṁ chaivāntaḥ śharīra-sthaṁ tān viddhy āsura-niśhchayān

and who senselessly torture the body and also me who live within it: know them as having demonic resolve.

What Krishna meant

Krishna adds that such senseless harshness toward the body also hurts the Self living within it. Looking after your body is part of respecting yourself. Sleep enough, eat on time and rest when tired. Being kind to yourself is not weakness.

āhāras tv api sarvasya tri-vidho bhavati priyaḥ
yajñas tapas tathā dānaṁ teṣhāṁ bhedam imaṁ śhṛiṇu

Even the food people like is of three kinds, and so are sacrifice, austerity and giving. Hear the difference.

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins a new topic: food, worship, discipline and giving each come in three kinds, matching the three moods of the mind. Everything we choose, even small daily choices, shows our inner state. He will go through them one by one for Arjuna.

āyuḥ-sattva-balārogya-sukha-prīti-vivardhanāḥ
rasyāḥ snigdhāḥ sthirā hṛidyā āhārāḥ sāttvika-priyāḥ

Foods that increase life, strength, health, happiness and cheer, which are tasty, soft, nourishing and pleasing, are liked by people in goodness.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says calm people like food that is fresh, tasty, nourishing and gives strength and cheer. The simple point: eating fresh, wholesome meals tends to leave you feeling light and steady. Choosing a home-cooked meal over junk is a small daily kindness to yourself.

kaṭv-amla-lavaṇāty-uṣhṇa- tīkṣhṇa-rūkṣha-vidāhinaḥ
āhārā rājasasyeṣhṭā duḥkha-śhokāmaya-pradāḥ

Foods that are too bitter, sour, salty, hot, sharp, dry or burning are liked by people in passion, and they bring pain, sorrow and illness.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that restless people crave food that is very spicy, sour, salty or sharp, which can leave them uncomfortable. The point is moderation. If you notice you overdo strong flavours when stressed, try a simpler meal and see how you feel.

yāta-yāmaṁ gata-rasaṁ pūti paryuṣhitaṁ cha yat
uchchhiṣhṭam api chāmedhyaṁ bhojanaṁ tāmasa-priyam

Food that is stale, tasteless, rotten, left over for long, or leftover from others and unclean is liked by people in darkness.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that dull, heavy-minded people lean toward food that is stale, tasteless or unclean. The simple lesson is to prefer fresh, clean food and avoid leftovers kept too long. Careful kitchen habits show care for yourself and your family.

aphalākāṅkṣhibhir yajño vidhi-driṣhṭo ya ijyate
yaṣhṭavyam eveti manaḥ samādhāya sa sāttvikaḥ

Sacrifice done by rule, without wanting any reward, with a mind set on it because it is a duty, is a good sacrifice.

What Krishna meant

Krishna now describes three kinds of worship or offering. The good kind is done because it is right, with a steady mind and no wish for a reward. Example: helping at a community event simply because it needs doing, not for praise. Doing good for its own sake brings quiet satisfaction.

abhisandhāya tu phalaṁ dambhārtham api chaiva yat
ijyate bharata-śhreṣhṭha taṁ yajñaṁ viddhi rājasam

But sacrifice done for a reward, or only for show, know that to be a passionate one, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that an offering made to get something in return, or just to look good, is the restless kind. If you donate only so people will see it, the heart is not in it. Ask yourself before doing a good deed: would I still do this if no one knew?

vidhi-hīnam asṛiṣhṭānnaṁ mantra-hīnam adakṣhiṇam
śhraddhā-virahitaṁ yajñaṁ tāmasaṁ parichakṣhate

A sacrifice done without rules, without giving food, without mantras, without gifts and without faith is called dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that an offering made carelessly, with no care, no generosity and no faith, is the dull kind. Doing things half-heartedly just to tick a box wastes the effort. Whether it is a family ritual or a work task, either do it with attention or choose not to.

deva-dwija-guru-prājña- pūjanaṁ śhaucham ārjavam
brahmacharyam ahinsā cha śhārīraṁ tapa uchyate

Respect for the gods, the wise and teachers, cleanliness, honesty, self-control and non-violence are called the discipline of the body.

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins describing discipline, starting with the body: respecting teachers and elders, cleanliness, honesty, self-control and not harming anyone. The easiest daily step is respect. A small greeting to an elder or a thank-you to a helper at work makes a good day.

anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ cha yat
svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ chaiva vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa uchyate

Speech that does not hurt, is true, kind and helpful, and the habit of reading good texts, is called the discipline of speech.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes discipline of speech: words that do not hurt, are true, kind and useful, plus the habit of reading good things. Before speaking when upset, ask: is it true, is it kind, is it useful? That one check can save many arguments.

manaḥ-prasādaḥ saumyatvaṁ maunam ātma-vinigrahaḥ
bhāva-sanśhuddhir ity etat tapo mānasam uchyate

A peaceful mind, gentleness, quiet, self-control and a pure heart are called the discipline of the mind.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes discipline of the mind: peace, gentleness, quietness, self-control and a clean heart. Peace of mind is built by small habits. Spend five minutes in quiet each day, without your phone, and see how it settles your thoughts before a busy day begins.

śhraddhayā parayā taptaṁ tapas tat tri-vidhaṁ naraiḥ
aphalākāṅkṣhibhir yuktaiḥ sāttvikaṁ parichakṣhate

This threefold discipline, done with great faith by steady people who want no reward, is called good.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when these three disciplines, of body, speech and mind, are practised with faith and no wish for rewards, they are the good kind. Steady effort for its own sake beats effort that waits for applause. Keep working at your habits, like exercise or kind speech, without counting the results daily.

satkāra-māna-pūjārthaṁ tapo dambhena chaiva yat
kriyate tad iha proktaṁ rājasaṁ chalam adhruvam

Discipline done to win respect, honour and worship, and out of show, is called passionate. It is unsteady and does not last.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that discipline done to win respect and fame is the restless kind, unsteady and not lasting. Hard work done only to look impressive fades the moment the audience leaves. Practise skills for the love of getting better and your effort will stay steady.

mūḍha-grāheṇātmano yat pīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ
parasyotsādanārthaṁ vā tat tāmasam udāhṛitam

Discipline done with foolish stubbornness, by hurting oneself or to harm another, is called dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that discipline done with stubborn foolishness, by hurting oneself or aiming to harm another, is the dull kind. Pushing yourself to exhaustion out of pride does no good. Be firm in effort but gentle with yourself, and never use your strength to hurt someone.

dātavyam iti yad dānaṁ dīyate ‘nupakāriṇe
deśhe kāle cha pātre cha tad dānaṁ sāttvikaṁ smṛitam

A gift given because it is right to give, to someone who cannot repay, at the right place and time and to a worthy person, is called good.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes good giving: a gift given because giving is right, to someone who cannot repay, at a suitable time and place, to a person in real need. Example: paying for a helper's child's school books quietly. Giving without expecting anything back brings the most joy.

yat tu pratyupakārārthaṁ phalam uddiśhya vā punaḥ
dīyate cha parikliṣhṭaṁ tad dānaṁ rājasaṁ smṛitam

But a gift given expecting something back, or wanting a reward, or given unwillingly, is called passionate.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a gift given hoping for something in return, for a reward, or grudgingly, is the restless kind. If you give with a sigh, or keep count of who owes you, the gift loses its warmth. Give freely or give less, but give with a good heart.

adeśha-kāle yad dānam apātrebhyaśh cha dīyate
asat-kṛitam avajñātaṁ tat tāmasam udāhṛitam

A gift given at the wrong place or time, to unworthy people, without respect or with contempt, is called dark.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a gift given at the wrong time or place, to someone unsuitable, or with disrespect and scorn, is the dull kind. How we give matters as much as what we give. Handing someone help with contempt hurts their dignity, so always give with respect.

oṁ tat sad iti nirdeśho brahmaṇas tri-vidhaḥ smṛitaḥ
brāhmaṇās tena vedāśh cha yajñāśh cha vihitāḥ purā

"Om Tat Sat" is the threefold name of the Supreme. By it, the wise, the Vedas and sacrifices were set in place long ago.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that three words, Om Tat Sat, are a name for the highest truth, and that wise people used them from ancient times to begin sacred acts. Think of them as reminders to keep our actions tied to something greater than ourselves, like starting your day with a moment of gratitude.

tasmād oṁ ity udāhṛitya yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-kriyāḥ
pravartante vidhānoktāḥ satataṁ brahma-vādinām

So acts of sacrifice, giving and discipline, as the scriptures describe, always begin with the word "Om" for those who speak of Brahman.

What Krishna meant

Krishna explains that the word Om is the starting sound for sacred acts, giving, and discipline, among those who follow the path of knowledge. A good beginning sets the tone. Taking one calm breath before a hard task, as a kind of 'Om', can steady your mind.

tad ity anabhisandhāya phalaṁ yajña-tapaḥ-kriyāḥ
dāna-kriyāśh cha vividhāḥ kriyante mokṣha-kāṅkṣhibhiḥ

Saying "Tat," without seeking rewards, those who want freedom perform various acts of sacrifice, discipline and giving.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that the word Tat is said by people who do good works, such as giving and discipline, without seeking a reward, wanting only freedom of the heart. Example: helping a colleague finish a task and not mentioning it later. Doing good without asking for credit keeps the mind light.

sad-bhāve sādhu-bhāve cha sad ity etat prayujyate
praśhaste karmaṇi tathā sach-chhabdaḥ pārtha yujyate

The word "Sat" is used for what is real and what is good. It is also used for an excellent action, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the word Sat means what is real and what is good, and is also used for an excellent deed. In daily life, ask whether what you are doing is honest and good. If yes, it is a Sat action, and you can do it with a clear conscience.

yajñe tapasi dāne cha sthitiḥ sad iti chochyate
karma chaiva tad-arthīyaṁ sad ity evābhidhīyate

Steadiness in sacrifice, discipline and giving is also called "Sat," and so is any action done for that purpose.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that being steady in giving, discipline and sacred acts is also called Sat, and so is any work done for such a purpose. So even an ordinary job counts when it is done for a good cause. A cook, a driver or a teacher who works honestly for others is doing Sat work.

aśhraddhayā hutaṁ dattaṁ tapas taptaṁ kṛitaṁ cha yat
asad ity uchyate pārtha na cha tat pretya no iha

Whatever is offered, given, practised or done without faith is called "Asat," Arjuna. It is of no use, neither here nor after death.

What Krishna meant

Krishna ends the chapter: whatever is given or done without faith, without heart, is Asat, empty. It brings no real benefit. Before starting something, ask if you believe in it. Putting your full heart into fewer things is better than doing many things hollowly.
