Chapter 15 of 18 · 20 verses

The Supreme Person

Krishna describes the world as an old tree with roots above and branches below, and says to cut its hold on us with detachment. He tells Arjuna that a part of him lives in every being as the living soul, and that he lives in every heart, giving memory and understanding.

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śhākham aśhvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam
chhandānsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit

Krishna says: They speak of an eternal peepal tree with roots above and branches below, whose leaves are the Vedas. One who knows this tree knows the Vedas.

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins with a picture: a world-tree with roots above and branches below, whose leaves are the sacred verses. This tree stands for the world, rooted in the Highest. Krishna means that life looks like a huge tree, and it helps to look for its true root and not get lost in the leaves.

guṇa-pravṛiddhā viṣhaya-pravālāḥ
adhaśh cha mūlāny anusantatāni
karmānubandhīni manuṣhya-loke

Its branches spread below and above, fed by the three qualities, with sense objects as its buds. Its roots reach down into the human world, tying people to action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the branches of this tree spread up and down, fed by the three qualities, with sense pleasures as buds. Its roots tie people to action here. Krishna means pleasures keep us busy and rooted in routines. Notice what pulls you, and choose it with care.

nānto na chādir na cha sampratiṣhṭhā
aśhvattham enaṁ su-virūḍha-mūlam
asaṅga-śhastreṇa dṛiḍhena chhittvā

Its true form is not seen here, nor its end, beginning or base. Cut this deeply rooted tree with the strong axe of detachment.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says we cannot easily see the tree's true form, its beginning or its end. He tells Arjuna to cut it with the strong axe of detachment. Krishna means to loosen your grip. For example, stop chasing what others own, and you will feel lighter.

tataḥ padaṁ tat parimārgitavyaṁ
yasmin gatā na nivartanti bhūyaḥ
tam eva chādyaṁ puruṣhaṁ prapadye
yataḥ pravṛittiḥ prasṛitā purāṇī

Then one should look for that place from which those who go never return, and think: I take refuge in that first Person from whom this ancient activity began.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that after detaching, one should look for that place from which no one returns, and take refuge in the first Person from whom everything began. Krishna means to look for a firm base. When life feels uncertain, turn to a steady source of strength, like prayer, family or a trusted teaching.

gachchhanty amūḍhāḥ padam avyayaṁ tat

Those who are free from pride and confusion, who have beaten bad attachments, who are always set on the Self, free from desire and from the pairs of pleasure and pain, reach that unchanging place without being confused.

What Krishna meant

This verse lists who reaches the unchanging place: people free from pride and confusion, not caught by bad attachments, free from selfish desire, and calm in pleasure and pain. The one that matters most is freedom from pride. Admit it when you are wrong, and you will gain respect.

na tad bhāsayate sūryo na śhaśhāṅko na pāvakaḥ
yad gatvā na nivartante tad dhāma paramaṁ mama

Neither sun, moon nor fire lights that place. Those who go there do not return. That is my highest home.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that place is not lit by the sun, moon or fire, and those who reach it do not come back. It is his highest home. Krishna means true peace has its own light and does not depend on outside things. When life is dark, look for the quiet light within.

mamaivānśho jīva-loke jīva-bhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ

A part of me, eternal, becomes the living soul in the world of living beings and pulls along the five senses and the mind, which belong to nature.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a part of him becomes the living soul in every living being, and it draws along the five senses and the mind. Krishna means there is something divine inside you. Remind yourself of this when you feel small or unworthy, and treat yourself with respect.

When the soul takes a body and when it leaves one, it carries these along, as the wind carries scents from their source.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when the soul takes a body or leaves one, it carries the senses and mind along, as the wind carries scents from flowers. Krishna means our habits and tendencies travel with us. So build good habits now, such as speaking kindly and being patient.

Using the ear, eye, touch, taste, smell and mind, it enjoys the objects of the senses.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the soul uses the ear, eye, touch, taste, smell and mind to enjoy the objects of the senses. In plain words, we experience the world through our senses. Use them mindfully: really taste your food, really listen to your family, rather than rushing through everything.

vimūḍhā nānupaśhyanti paśhyanti jñāna-chakṣhuṣhaḥ

The confused cannot see it when it leaves, stays or enjoys with the qualities. Those with the eye of knowledge can see it.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that confused people cannot see the soul leaving, staying or enjoying, but those with the eye of knowledge can. Krishna means that seeing deeply takes a calm, aware mind. When you slow down and pay attention to someone, you notice much more than their words.

What Krishna meant

What Krishna meant

Krishna says there are two kinds of beings in the world: the perishable and the imperishable. All living bodies are perishable, while the unchanging one is called imperishable. Krishna means that things pass but something steady remains. Put your best effort in what lasts, such as love and good character.

This, the deepest teaching, has been told by me, sinless Arjuna. Understanding this, one becomes wise and has done all one needed to do.
