Meditation and Self-Control

Krishna teaches how to sit, steady the mind and meditate. The mind is restless like the wind, but with regular practice and letting go of what pulls us away, it can be trained. Moderation in food, sleep and effort helps. He tells Arjuna that no sincere effort is ever wasted.

The Blessed Lord says: One who does the work that must be done without depending on its fruit is both a renouncer and a yogi, not one who merely lights no fire or does no work.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna that a true yogi is not someone who simply stops working or sits by a fire. It is someone who does what needs doing without fretting over the reward. For example, cook dinner for your family because it is a kind thing to do, not to hear praise.

yaṁ sannyāsam iti prāhur yogaṁ taṁ viddhi pāṇḍava
na hyasannyasta-saṅkalpo yogī bhavati kaśhchana

What they call renunciation, know that to be yoga, Arjuna. No one becomes a yogi without giving up selfish wishes.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that giving up and yoga are really the same thing, Arjuna. Nobody becomes calm inside while still chasing selfish wishes. For example, if you stop obsessing over who will notice your effort at work, you will feel lighter and still do the job well.

ārurukṣhor muner yogaṁ karma kāraṇam uchyate
yogārūḍhasya tasyaiva śhamaḥ kāraṇam uchyate

For a sage who wants to climb to yoga, action is the means. For the same one who has climbed, stillness is the means.

What Krishna meant

Krishna explains two stages of the path. When you are beginning, steady work helps you grow. Once you have grown calm, quiet stillness helps you go deeper. Think of a student who first practises sums every day, and later can simply sit and think a problem through peacefully.

yadā hi nendriyārtheṣhu na karmasv-anuṣhajjate
sarva-saṅkalpa-sannyāsī yogārūḍhas tadochyate

When one is attached neither to sense objects nor to actions, and has given up all selfish wishes, one is said to have climbed to yoga.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says a person has reached the calm state of yoga when they are no longer pulled by every pleasure or tied to every task, and no longer ruled by selfish wishes. For example, you can enjoy a good meal and then walk away happily without craving more.

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet
ātmaiva hyātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

Lift yourself by yourself and do not let yourself sink. You alone are your friend, and you alone are your enemy.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna to lift himself up and not let himself fall, because each person is their own best friend and their own worst enemy. For example, when you feel lazy or full of self-doubt, speak to yourself the way a kind friend would, and take one small step.

bandhur ātmātmanas tasya yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ
anātmanas tu śhatrutve vartetātmaiva śhatru-vat

For one who has conquered the self by the self, the self is a friend. But for one who has not, the self acts like an enemy.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when you have learned to guide your own mind, it becomes your helper. When you have not, the same mind works against you. For example, a person who has trained their mind to stay calm can pause before an angry reply, while an untrained mind blurts out words it later regrets.

jitātmanaḥ praśhāntasya paramātmā samāhitaḥ
śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣhu tathā mānāpamānayoḥ

One who has conquered the self and is calm rests in the Supreme in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, honour and dishonour.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says a person whose mind is under control and at peace stays steady in heat and cold, joy and sorrow, praise and insult. For example, if a colleague criticises you in a meeting, you can listen calmly, take what is useful and not let it ruin your whole day.

jñāna-vijñāna-tṛiptātmā kūṭa-stho vijitendriyaḥ
yukta ityuchyate yogī sama-loṣhṭāśhma-kāñchanaḥ

A yogi content with knowledge and wisdom, steady and master of the senses, who sees a clod, a stone and gold alike, is called one in yoga.

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes a steady person who is happy with what they know and have learned, and who treats a lump of mud, a stone and gold as equally ordinary. For example, someone like this does not feel their worth rise or fall with a new gadget or a bigger salary.

suhṛin-mitrāryudāsīna-madhyastha-dveṣhya-bandhuṣhu
sādhuṣhvapi cha pāpeṣhu sama-buddhir viśhiṣhyate

The one who treats well-wishers, friends, enemies, strangers, neutral people, the hateful, relatives, the good and the wicked equally is best.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the best person is the one who treats everyone with the same fairness, whether friend, enemy, stranger, relative, good or bad. For example, a shopkeeper who serves a rude customer as politely as a regular one shows this kind of even heart.

yogī yuñjīta satatam ātmānaṁ rahasi sthitaḥ
ekākī yata-chittātmā nirāśhīr aparigrahaḥ

A yogi should always practise, staying in a quiet place alone, with mind and body controlled, free from hope and possessions.

What Krishna meant

Krishna now begins to teach how to practise stillness. He says a seeker should regularly go to a quiet place alone, keep body and mind steady, and not cling to wishes or things. For example, even ten minutes alone each morning without your phone can calm a busy mind.

śhuchau deśhe pratiṣhṭhāpya sthiram āsanam ātmanaḥ
nātyuchchhritaṁ nāti-nīchaṁ chailājina-kuśhottaram

In a clean place, set up a firm seat, neither too high nor too low, covered with cloth, deer skin and kusha grass.

What Krishna meant

Krishna gives simple advice about the seat for sitting quietly. Choose a clean spot and a firm, comfortable place, not too high and not too low, with a soft covering. For example, a folded blanket on a tidy corner of the floor works well, because comfort helps you stay still.

tatraikāgraṁ manaḥ kṛitvā yata-chittendriya-kriyaḥ
upaviśhyāsane yuñjyād yogam ātma-viśhuddhaye

There, making the mind one-pointed and keeping thoughts and senses in check, sitting on the seat, one should practise yoga for self-purification.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that once seated, you should gather your scattered mind into one point and quieten thoughts and senses, so that the mind becomes clean and clear. For example, before an exam or an important call, sit for a few minutes, let go of worries, and focus on a single breath at a time.

samaṁ kāya-śhiro-grīvaṁ dhārayann achalaṁ sthiraḥ
samprekṣhya nāsikāgraṁ svaṁ diśhaśh chānavalokayan

Holding the body, head and neck straight and still, and looking at the tip of one's nose without looking around,

What Krishna meant

Krishna continues describing the sitting posture: keep the body, head and neck straight and still, and look steadily ahead without letting the eyes wander. For example, sitting upright instead of slouching over a phone makes your breathing easier and helps you feel more alert and settled.

praśhāntātmā vigata-bhīr brahmachāri-vrate sthitaḥ
manaḥ sanyamya mach-chitto yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ

calm, fearless, firm in the vow of discipline, with the mind controlled and fixed on me, one should sit steady with me as the goal.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the person practising should be calm, free of fear, keep their promise to practise, and hold their mind on Krishna as the goal. For example, a person who feels nervous before a hard talk can sit quietly, breathe, and trust that they will find the right words.

yuñjann evaṁ sadātmānaṁ yogī niyata-mānasaḥ
śhantiṁ nirvāṇa-paramāṁ mat-sansthām adhigachchhati

Thus keeping the mind always steady, the yogi with a controlled mind reaches the peace that ends in freedom and rests in me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that when someone keeps the mind steady like this every day, they find a deep peace that frees them from worry and rests in him. For example, daily practice is like watering a plant: small, regular effort slowly builds a calm that stays with you.

nātyaśhnatastu yogo ’sti na chaikāntam anaśhnataḥ
na chāti-svapna-śhīlasya jāgrato naiva chārjuna

Yoga is not for one who eats too much or who does not eat at all, nor for one who sleeps too much or stays awake too much, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna that calm does not come from extremes. Eating too much or too little, sleeping too much or too little, all spoil it. For example, a student who studies all night and skips meals before an exam often performs worse than one who rests properly.

yuktāhāra-vihārasya yukta-cheṣhṭasya karmasu
yukta-svapnāvabodhasya yogo bhavati duḥkha-hā

Yoga that destroys sorrow belongs to one who is moderate in food and recreation, in effort at work, and in sleep and waking.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that moderation in food, play, work and sleep is what removes sorrow. A balanced day brings a calm mind. For example, setting regular times for meals, rest and work, and not skipping any of them, can reduce stress more than any big plan.

yadā viniyataṁ chittam ātmanyevāvatiṣhṭhate
niḥspṛihaḥ sarva-kāmebhyo yukta ityuchyate tadā

When the mind is well controlled and rests in the self alone, free from longing for all desires, one is said to be in yoga.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says a person is in yoga when the well-trained mind rests peacefully within itself and no longer hungers for every desire. For example, think of a time you sat happily with nothing to chase or prove. That quiet contentment is the taste of what Krishna describes.

yathā dīpo nivāta-stho neṅgate sopamā smṛitā
yogino yata-chittasya yuñjato yogam ātmanaḥ

As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker, so is the mind of a yogi who has controlled the mind and practises union with the self.

What Krishna meant

Krishna gives a picture: a lamp in a place with no wind burns without flickering, and a trained mind is just as steady. For example, when you read a book you love, the noise around you fades, and your attention stays still like that flame.

yatroparamate chittaṁ niruddhaṁ yoga-sevayā
yatra chaivātmanātmānaṁ paśhyann ātmani tuṣhyati

When the mind, held still by yoga practice, becomes quiet, and one sees the self by the self and is content in the self,

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins describing what this stillness feels like. When the mind, quieted by steady practice, grows calm, a person sees their true Self clearly and feels content within. For example, after a long walk alone, you sometimes feel complete without needing anyone or anything.

sukham ātyantikaṁ yat tad buddhi-grāhyam atīndriyam
vetti yatra na chaivāyaṁ sthitaśh chalati tattvataḥ

and finds that limitless joy that the intellect can grasp but the senses cannot, and standing in it never slips away from the truth,

What Krishna meant

Krishna continues: in that state a person finds a boundless joy that the mind can sense but outer pleasures cannot give, and they do not drift away from the truth. For example, the happiness of a quiet, grateful moment lasts longer than the thrill of buying something new.

yaṁ labdhvā chāparaṁ lābhaṁ manyate nādhikaṁ tataḥ
yasmin sthito na duḥkhena guruṇāpi vichālyate

and having gained it thinks there is no greater gain, and standing in it is not shaken even by the heaviest sorrow,

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that once someone finds this inner joy, they feel nothing else is greater, and even a very heavy sorrow cannot shake them. For example, a person with deep inner peace can face a loss or a failure, feel the pain, and still stay steady underneath.

taṁ vidyād duḥkha-sanyoga-viyogaṁ yogasaṅjñitam
sa niśhchayena yoktavyo yogo ’nirviṇṇa-chetasā

know that state, free from union with pain, as yoga. It should be practised with determination and a mind that does not give up.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says this state, where one is no longer tied to pain, is true yoga. He adds that it should be practised with determination and a mind that does not get discouraged. For example, if you miss a few days of your routine, simply begin again without scolding yourself.

saṅkalpa-prabhavān kāmāns tyaktvā sarvān aśheṣhataḥ
manasaivendriya-grāmaṁ viniyamya samantataḥ

Giving up completely all desires born of selfish wishes, and holding the group of senses in check on all sides with the mind,

What Krishna meant

Krishna explains how to begin: let go of the desires that come from selfish wishes, and gently use the mind to hold the senses back from running everywhere. For example, when you feel the urge to check your phone again and again, notice it, breathe, and put it down.

śhanaiḥ śhanair uparamed buddhyā dhṛiti-gṛihītayā
ātma-sansthaṁ manaḥ kṛitvā na kiñchid api chintayet

one should slowly find stillness with a mind held steady by firmness. Fixing the mind on the self, one should think of nothing at all.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says to grow calm little by little, holding the mind steady with patience, and to rest it in the Self without forcing thoughts. For example, when you are anxious at night, do not fight every worry. Slow your breathing and let them pass gradually.

yato yato niśhcharati manaśh chañchalam asthiram
tatas tato niyamyaitad ātmanyeva vaśhaṁ nayet

Whatever makes the restless and unsteady mind wander, one should hold it back from there and bring it under the control of the self alone.

What Krishna meant

Krishna admits the mind will wander, and tells us what to do. Each time it runs off, gently bring it back under your own guidance. For example, if your attention drifts while you listen to a family member, simply return to their words without blaming yourself.

praśhānta-manasaṁ hyenaṁ yoginaṁ sukham uttamam
upaiti śhānta-rajasaṁ brahma-bhūtam akalmaṣham

Supreme happiness comes to this yogi whose mind is at peace, whose passion is calmed, who is free from faults and has become one with the Supreme.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that deep happiness comes to the person whose mind is peaceful, whose restless energy has settled and who feels at one with the highest. For example, when anger or hurry fades after a good rest, the ordinary day suddenly feels pleasant and spacious.

yuñjann evaṁ sadātmānaṁ yogī vigata-kalmaṣhaḥ
sukhena brahma-sansparśham atyantaṁ sukham aśhnute

Thus always joining oneself in yoga, the yogi free of faults easily enjoys the endless happiness of touching the Supreme.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that the person who keeps practising and is free of inner faults easily finds a happiness that never runs out, a feeling of being close to the highest truth. For example, steady daily habits feel hard at first but become easy and joyful over time.

sarva-bhūta-stham ātmānaṁ sarva-bhūtāni chātmani
īkṣhate yoga-yuktātmā sarvatra sama-darśhanaḥ

One joined in yoga sees the self in all beings and all beings in the self, and sees the same everywhere.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a person who has reached this calm sees their own Self in every being and every being in the Self, looking at all with the same eye. For example, you may begin to see that a stranger feels worries and hopes just as you do.

One who sees me everywhere and sees everything in me, for that person I am never lost, and that person is never lost to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that for the person who sees him in everything, and everything in him, he is never lost, and that person is never lost to him. For example, in a hard time, remembering that you are never truly alone can give you courage to carry on.

sarva-bhūta-sthitaṁ yo māṁ bhajatyekatvam āsthitaḥ
sarvathā vartamāno ’pi sa yogī mayi vartate

The yogi who is established in oneness and worships me as dwelling in all beings lives in me, however he may live.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a person who knows all life is one and honours the divine in every being stays with him, however they live their daily life. For example, a person can be a busy parent or worker and still treat each person they meet with respect.

ātmaupamyena sarvatra samaṁ paśhyati yo ’rjuna
sukhaṁ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṁ sa yogī paramo mataḥ

One who sees the same everywhere by comparing it with oneself, whether in pleasure or in pain, Arjuna, is considered the greatest yogi.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the greatest yogi is the one who feels another person's joy and pain as their own and so treats everyone fairly. For example, before speaking harshly to a waiter or a junior, you imagine how those words would feel to you, and choose kinder ones.

arjuna uvācha
yo ’yaṁ yogas tvayā proktaḥ sāmyena madhusūdana
etasyāhaṁ na paśhyāmi chañchalatvāt sthitiṁ sthirām

Arjuna says: Krishna, this yoga of evenness that you describe, I do not see how it can last, because the mind is restless.

What Krishna meant

Arjuna speaks honestly to Krishna. He says this calm, even-minded yoga sounds wonderful, but he cannot see how it could last because the mind keeps moving. For example, we all know the feeling of promising to stay calm and then losing it within an hour.

chañchalaṁ hi manaḥ kṛiṣhṇa pramāthi balavad dṛiḍham
tasyāhaṁ nigrahaṁ manye vāyor iva su-duṣhkaram

The mind is restless, turbulent, strong and stubborn, Krishna. I think controlling it is as hard as controlling the wind.

What Krishna meant

Arjuna goes on to say that the mind is restless, strong, stubborn and troublesome, and holding it back seems as hard as holding the wind. For example, trying to stop worrying at night often makes the thoughts louder, and Arjuna's frustration is easy to understand.

śhrī bhagavān uvācha
asanśhayaṁ mahā-bāho mano durnigrahaṁ chalam
abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa cha gṛihyate

The Blessed Lord says: Without doubt, mighty-armed, the mind is restless and hard to hold. But it can be held by practice and detachment.

What Krishna meant

Krishna answers kindly. He agrees that the mind is restless and hard to hold, but says it can be trained through regular practice and by loosening its grip on wants. For example, a daily short walk or quiet time slowly teaches the mind to settle, just like exercise builds strength.

asaṅyatātmanā yogo duṣhprāpa iti me matiḥ
vaśhyātmanā tu yatatā śhakyo ’vāptum upāyataḥ

I think yoga is hard to reach for one who has no self-control, but one who is disciplined and strives can reach it by the right means.

What Krishna meant

Krishna adds that this calm is hard for someone who makes no effort to control themselves, but a person who keeps trying with the right methods can reach it. For example, learning to swim feels impossible at first, yet steady practice with a good teacher makes it happen.

arjuna uvācha
ayatiḥ śhraddhayopeto yogāch chalita-mānasaḥ
aprāpya yoga-sansiddhiṁ kāṅ gatiṁ kṛiṣhṇa gachchhati

Arjuna asks: What happens to one who has faith but little effort, whose mind slips from yoga before reaching perfection?

What Krishna meant

Arjuna asks a caring question. What happens to a person who starts with faith but does not try hard enough, and whose mind slips away before they reach the goal? For example, think of someone who begins a good habit, then life gets busy and they stop.

kachchin nobhaya-vibhraṣhṭaśh chhinnābhram iva naśhyati
apratiṣhṭho mahā-bāho vimūḍho brahmaṇaḥ pathi

Does he not perish like a broken cloud, fallen from both paths, with no support and confused on the way to the Supreme?

What Krishna meant

Arjuna worries further. Does such a person get lost like a torn cloud, having missed both the worldly life and the spiritual one, with no support at all? For example, someone who leaves a job to follow a dream and then stops may fear they have wasted everything.

etan me sanśhayaṁ kṛiṣhṇa chhettum arhasyaśheṣhataḥ
tvad-anyaḥ sanśhayasyāsya chhettā na hyupapadyate

Krishna, please remove this doubt of mine completely. No one other than you can remove it.

What Krishna meant

Arjuna asks Krishna to clear this doubt completely, saying that no one else is able to do it. For example, when we have a worry that is stuck in our mind, it helps to go to a wise, trusted person and ask openly, as Arjuna does here.

śhrī bhagavān uvācha
pārtha naiveha nāmutra vināśhas tasya vidyate
na hi kalyāṇa-kṛit kaśhchid durgatiṁ tāta gachchhati

The Blessed Lord says: Arjuna, there is no ruin for such a person, here or hereafter. No one who does good ever comes to a bad end, my friend.

What Krishna meant

Krishna comforts Arjuna warmly. He says that a person who tries to do good is never ruined, in this life or after, and that no one who does good meets a bad end. For example, if you tried hard and fell short, the effort still counts and has made you better.

prāpya puṇya-kṛitāṁ lokān uṣhitvā śhāśhvatīḥ samāḥ
śhuchīnāṁ śhrīmatāṁ gehe yoga-bhraṣhṭo’bhijāyate

One who has strayed from yoga reaches the worlds of the righteous, lives there for many years and is then born in the home of the pure and prosperous.

What Krishna meant

Krishna explains that a person who slipped from the path before finishing is not lost. They enjoy good results of their goodness for a long time, and are later born into a kind and comfortable home. For example, good effort is like a seed that keeps its power, even when you leave it for a while.

atha vā yoginām eva kule bhavati dhīmatām
etad dhi durlabhataraṁ loke janma yad īdṛiśham

Or one is born in the family of wise yogis. Such a birth is even harder to find in this world.

What Krishna meant

Krishna adds that such a person may instead be born into a family of wise and disciplined people, though such a birth is very rare. For example, growing up in a home that values calm and learning is a great gift that not everyone gets.

tatra taṁ buddhi-sanyogaṁ labhate paurva-dehikam
yatate cha tato bhūyaḥ sansiddhau kuru-nandana

There he recovers the wisdom of his earlier life and strives again towards perfection, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that in that new life, the person naturally picks up the understanding they had before and again moves towards the goal. For example, when you return to an old skill like cycling or a language after years, it comes back faster than you expected.

pūrvābhyāsena tenaiva hriyate hyavaśho ’pi saḥ
jijñāsur api yogasya śhabda-brahmātivartate

By that same earlier practice he is carried on even against his will. Even one who just wants to know yoga rises above the words of the scriptures.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that the earlier practice itself pulls the person forward, almost without their choosing. Even someone who is only curious about this path moves beyond mere ritual. For example, a little curiosity to learn meditation today can quietly grow into a lasting habit.

prayatnād yatamānas tu yogī sanśhuddha-kilbiṣhaḥ
aneka-janma-sansiddhas tato yāti parāṁ gatim

But the yogi who strives with effort, cleansed of faults and perfected through many births, then reaches the highest goal.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the person who keeps striving with effort, cleans away faults and grows over many lives finally reaches the highest goal. For example, becoming a patient and kind person does not happen overnight. It grows through many small lessons and sincere tries.

tapasvibhyo ’dhiko yogī
jñānibhyo ’pi mato ’dhikaḥ
karmibhyaśh chādhiko yogī
tasmād yogī bhavārjuna

The yogi is greater than ascetics, greater even than the learned, and greater than those who do rituals. So, Arjuna, become a yogi.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna that a yogi, someone who trains the mind, is greater than those who only fast, only study or only perform rituals. So he urges Arjuna to become one. For example, a calm and kind person is worth more than a person who only knows many facts.

yoginām api sarveṣhāṁ mad-gatenāntar-ātmanā
śhraddhāvān bhajate yo māṁ sa me yuktatamo mataḥ

Of all yogis, the one who, with the inner self absorbed in me, worships me with faith is, in my view, the most united.

What Krishna meant

Krishna ends the chapter by saying that, of all yogis, the one who loves him and worships with faith, with the heart absorbed in him, is the most united. For example, when you do your work with love and trust, it can feel less like a burden and more like an offering.
