Letting Go While Acting

Arjuna asks which is better: giving up work or doing work. Krishna says working without attachment is the easier and better path. A person who sees all beings as equal, who is not shaken by pleasure and pain, stays calm even in the middle of action.

arjuna uvācha
sannyāsaṁ karmaṇāṁ kṛiṣhṇa punar yogaṁ cha śhansasi
yach chhreya etayor ekaṁ tan me brūhi su-niśhchitam

Arjuna asks: Krishna, you praise giving up actions and also yoga of action. Tell me clearly which one is better.

What Krishna meant

Arjuna is puzzled again. Krishna has praised giving up action and also acting with wisdom, so Arjuna asks him to say clearly which one is better. When two good options confuse you, ask for a straight answer. For example, ask a mentor, which one should I choose for now?

śhrī bhagavān uvācha
sannyāsaḥ karma-yogaśh cha niḥśhreyasa-karāvubhau
tayos tu karma-sannyāsāt karma-yogo viśhiṣhyate

The Blessed Lord says: Giving up action and yoga of action both lead to the highest good. But of the two, yoga of action is better than giving up action.

What Krishna meant

Krishna answers that both paths lead to the highest good, but of the two, working with the right attitude is better than giving up work. Stepping away from duties is not easy for most people. Doing your daily tasks calmly and with care is a practical way to grow, right where you are.

One who neither hates nor craves is always a renouncer. Free from opposites, mighty-armed, such a person is easily freed from bondage.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that a person who neither hates nor craves is a true renouncer, even while living a normal life. Such a person is free from the pull of opposites. Real letting go is inside. You can keep your job and family, and still avoid hating a rival or chasing every gain.

sānkhya-yogau pṛithag bālāḥ pravadanti na paṇḍitāḥ
ekamapyāsthitaḥ samyag ubhayor vindate phalam

Only the immature, not the wise, say that knowledge and yoga of action are different. One who is truly established in either gets the fruit of both.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that only the immature think the path of knowledge and the path of action are different, while the wise know that being firmly established in either brings the fruit of both. There is no need to argue about which is superior. Pick the one that suits you and practise it sincerely.

yat sānkhyaiḥ prāpyate sthānaṁ tad yogair api gamyate
ekaṁ sānkhyaṁ cha yogaṁ cha yaḥ paśhyati sa paśhyati

The place reached by those of knowledge is also reached by those of action. One who sees knowledge and action as one sees truly.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that the place reached by those who follow knowledge is also reached by those who follow action. One who sees both as one, sees truly. Two friends can take different roads to the same town. Do not look down on someone whose way of living or praying differs from yours.

sannyāsas tu mahā-bāho duḥkham āptum ayogataḥ
yoga-yukto munir brahma na chireṇādhigachchhati

But giving up action without yoga, mighty-armed, is hard to reach. A sage joined with yoga soon reaches Brahman.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that giving up work without inner discipline is hard to manage, while a thoughtful person who works with steady practice soon reaches peace. Leaving duties does not automatically calm the mind. If you quit a stressful job without learning to handle stress, the stress will probably follow you.

yoga-yukto viśhuddhātmā vijitātmā jitendriyaḥ
sarva-bhūtātma-bhūtātmā kurvann api na lipyate

One who is steady in yoga, pure in heart, self-controlled, and who sees oneself in all beings is not stained even while acting.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says one who is steady, pure in heart, self-controlled and who sees themselves in all beings stays untouched even while working. Seeing others as like you changes how you act. When a delivery person is late, remember they may have a hard day too, and you respond with patience.

naiva kiñchit karomīti yukto manyeta tattva-vit
paśhyañ śhṛiṇvan spṛiśhañjighrann aśhnangachchhan svapañśhvasan
pralapan visṛijan gṛihṇann unmiṣhan nimiṣhann api
indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣhu vartanta iti dhārayan

The one who knows the truth and is steady thinks, I do nothing at all, even while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, walking, sleeping and breathing,

What Krishna meant

Krishna describes how a wise person feels while seeing, hearing, eating, walking, sleeping and breathing: I am not the doer, these are just the senses at work. It is a way of staying light. When you catch yourself overreacting, say to yourself, this is just a reaction passing through.

pralapan visṛjan gṛhṇann unmiṣan nimiṣann api indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣu vartanta iti dhārayan

speaking, letting go, holding, opening and closing the eyes, keeping in mind that only the senses move among sense objects.

What Krishna meant

Krishna continues the same thought, speaking, letting go, holding, opening and closing the eyes: the wise remember that only the senses are moving among their objects. This is meant to loosen our grip on ego. When you are praised or blamed, remember that your body and words are doing a small part of a big whole.

brahmaṇyādhāya karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā karoti yaḥ
lipyate na sa pāpena padma-patram ivāmbhasā

One who acts, offering actions to the Supreme and giving up attachment, is not touched by sin, as a lotus leaf is not touched by water.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says one who works, offering the results to the Supreme and letting go of attachment, is not touched by wrong, just as a lotus leaf stays dry in water. Do your job in the middle of messy surroundings and still keep your heart clean. Be fair at work even where others cut corners.

kāyena manasā buddhyā kevalair indriyair api
yoginaḥ karma kurvanti saṅgaṁ tyaktvātma-śhuddhaye

Yogis act with body, mind, intellect and even the senses alone, giving up attachment, for the purification of the self.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that those who are steady in yoga act with the body, mind, intellect and senses, dropping attachment, in order to purify themselves. Work becomes a way to clean the mind. When you do chores like cleaning or cooking calmly and without complaining, they leave you feeling a little clearer and lighter.

yuktaḥ karma-phalaṁ tyaktvā śhāntim āpnoti naiṣhṭhikīm
ayuktaḥ kāma-kāreṇa phale sakto nibadhyate

One who is steady in yoga, giving up the fruit of action, finds lasting peace. One who is not steady, driven by desire and attached to results, is bound.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says one who gives up the longing for results finds lasting peace, while one who is driven by desire and attached to results stays bound. The same effort can bring peace or stress, depending on the attitude. Prepare well for a presentation, then let go of worrying about how it will be judged.

sarva-karmāṇi manasā sannyasyāste sukhaṁ vaśhī
nava-dvāre pure dehī naiva kurvan na kārayan

The self-controlled person, mentally giving up all actions, rests happily in the city of nine gates, neither acting nor making others act.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says a self-controlled person gives up all actions in the mind and rests happily, as if in a city with nine gates, neither acting nor making others act. Inside, they stay at ease. On a busy day, take a minute in the middle to be still and remember that inside you can be calm.

na kartṛitvaṁ na karmāṇi lokasya sṛijati prabhuḥ
na karma-phala-saṅyogaṁ svabhāvas tu pravartate

The Lord does not create the doership or the actions of the world, nor the link between action and its fruit. It is nature that works.

What Krishna meant

Krishna explains that the Lord does not make people feel they are the doers, nor does he decide the link between actions and results. It is nature working by its own way. Therefore do not blame God for every trouble, and do not take all the credit for every good thing either.

nādatte kasyachit pāpaṁ na chaiva sukṛitaṁ vibhuḥ
ajñānenāvṛitaṁ jñānaṁ tena muhyanti jantavaḥ

The all-pervading one does not take on anyone's sin or good deeds. Knowledge is covered by ignorance, and so beings are confused.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the all-pervading Supreme does not take anyone's wrongs or good deeds, but people are confused because ignorance covers their knowledge. Sometimes our own muddled thinking makes us feel guilty or proud for no reason. Pause and ask honestly, what is true here, instead of just feeling?

jñānena tu tad ajñānaṁ yeṣhāṁ nāśhitam ātmanaḥ
teṣhām āditya-vaj jñānaṁ prakāśhayati tat param

But for those whose ignorance is destroyed by knowledge of the self, that knowledge lights up the Supreme like the sun.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that for those whose ignorance is removed by knowledge of the Self, that knowledge shines like the sun and reveals the Supreme. Understanding clears away confusion as sunrise clears the dark. When a long worry finally gets explained by facts or a talk with someone, the relief is like that.

5.17

tad-buddhayas tad-ātmānas tan-niṣhṭhās tat-parāyaṇāḥ
gachchhantyapunar-āvṛittiṁ jñāna-nirdhūta-kalmaṣhāḥ

Those whose mind, self and faith are fixed on That, and who are devoted to That, their sins washed away by knowledge, go where there is no return.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that those whose mind, Self and faith are fixed on the Supreme, who are devoted to it and washed clean by knowledge, reach a place of no return. In simple words, steady focus on what is highest brings deep and lasting peace. Spend a few quiet minutes daily on what you value most.

vidyā-vinaya-sampanne brāhmaṇe gavi hastini
śhuni chaiva śhva-pāke cha paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśhinaḥ

The wise see the same in a learned and humble Brahmin, in a cow, in an elephant, in a dog and in an outcaste.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the wise look at everyone with the same eye: a learned scholar, a cow, an elephant, a dog and even someone treated as an outcast. Every living being deserves respect. In daily life, speak as politely to the cleaner or driver as you do to your boss.

ihaiva tair jitaḥ sargo yeṣhāṁ sāmye sthitaṁ manaḥ
nirdoṣhaṁ hi samaṁ brahma tasmād brahmaṇi te sthitāḥ

Even here, those whose mind rests in equality have conquered birth and death. The Supreme is flawless and equal, so they rest in the Supreme.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that those whose minds rest in equality have already won over the cycle of birth and death even in this life, because the Supreme is flawless and the same everywhere. Fair-mindedness is a form of freedom. Treat your child, colleague and stranger by the same fair standard.

na prahṛiṣhyet priyaṁ prāpya nodvijet prāpya chāpriyam
sthira-buddhir asammūḍho brahma-vid brahmaṇi sthitaḥ

One should not rejoice on getting what is pleasant, nor be upset on getting what is unpleasant. Steady, unconfused, knowing the Supreme, one rests in the Supreme.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says one should not get too excited at pleasant things or too upset at unpleasant ones, and should stay steady and clear-minded. Good and bad days both pass. When you get a big compliment or a rude email, take a breath and treat both as passing weather.

bāhya-sparśheṣhvasaktātmā vindatyātmani yat sukham
sa brahma-yoga-yuktātmā sukham akṣhayam aśhnute

One who is unattached to outer pleasures finds happiness in the self. Joined to the Supreme in yoga, such a person enjoys lasting happiness.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says someone who is not clinging to outer pleasures finds happiness within, and being joined to the Supreme enjoys lasting joy. Real contentment comes from inside. Instead of needing a new thing to feel good, try sitting quietly for five minutes and notice how much calm you already have.

ye hi sansparśha-jā bhogā duḥkha-yonaya eva te
ādyantavantaḥ kaunteya na teṣhu ramate budhaḥ

Pleasures born of contact are sources of suffering. They have a beginning and an end, Arjuna. The wise do not delight in them.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says pleasures that come from contact with outside things carry trouble inside, because they start and end, and the wise do not rely on them. A sweet treat or a new phone feels great for a while. Enjoy such things gently, but keep your steady happiness in things like friendship and calm work.

śhaknotīhaiva yaḥ soḍhuṁ prāk śharīra-vimokṣhaṇāt
kāma-krodhodbhavaṁ vegaṁ sa yuktaḥ sa sukhī naraḥ

One who can bear the force of desire and anger even before leaving the body is a yogi and a happy person.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says one who can withstand the rush of desire and anger while still alive is a true yogi and a happy person. You cannot always stop feelings from rising, but you can choose not to be swept away. Count to ten before replying to a message that makes you angry.

yo 'ntaḥ-sukho 'ntar-ārāmas tathāntar-jyotir eva yaḥ
sa yogī brahma-nirvāṇaṁ brahma-bhūto 'dhigachchhati

One who finds happiness, rest and light within becomes one with the Supreme and reaches freedom in the Supreme.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says one who finds happiness, rest and light within becomes one with the Supreme and reaches freedom in it. Peace is something you can discover inside yourself. For example, after a hard day, a few quiet minutes of stillness or prayer can refill you better than more noise or screens.

labhante brahma-nirvāṇam ṛiṣhayaḥ kṣhīṇa-kalmaṣhāḥ
chhinna-dvaidhā yatātmānaḥ sarva-bhūta-hite ratāḥ

Sages whose sins are gone, whose doubts are cut, who are self-controlled and who delight in the welfare of all beings reach freedom in the Supreme.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that sages whose faults are gone, whose doubts are cut, who are self-controlled and who enjoy the good of all beings reach freedom in the Supreme. Caring for others and a clear mind go together. Helping a neighbour or volunteering can quiet your own worries too.

kāma-krodha-viyuktānāṁ yatīnāṁ yata-chetasām
abhito brahma-nirvāṇaṁ vartate viditātmanām

For ascetics free from desire and anger, with controlled minds and self-knowledge, freedom in the Supreme is near on every side.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that for those free from desire and anger, with a controlled mind and knowledge of the Self, freedom is close on every side. Peace is nearer than it seems. When you let go of one grudge or one small craving today, you will feel a bit of that freedom immediately.

Shutting out outer contacts, fixing the gaze between the eyebrows, and making the in-breath and out-breath even in the nostrils,

What Krishna meant

Krishna briefly describes a quiet meditation posture: shutting out outside contacts, looking gently between the eyebrows and making the breath even. It is a way to settle the mind. If you are anxious before something important, sit still, breathe evenly and slowly for a minute or two, and see how you feel.

yatendriya-mano-buddhir munir mokṣa-parāyaṇaḥ vigatecchā-bhaya-krodho yaḥ sadā mukta eva saḥ

the sage who controls senses, mind and intellect, aims at freedom and is rid of wish, fear and anger is always free.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the sage who controls the senses, mind and intellect, who aims at freedom and is rid of wishes, fear and anger, is always free. A person like this is not ruled by moods. To practise a little of this, notice one fear today and ask whether it is real, then let it go.

bhoktāraṁ yajña-tapasāṁ sarva-loka-maheśhvaram
suhṛidaṁ sarva-bhūtānāṁ jñātvā māṁ śhāntim ṛichchhati

Knowing me as the receiver of sacrifices and austerities, the great Lord of all worlds and the friend of all beings, one finds peace.

What Krishna meant

Krishna ends the chapter with a calm promise: one who knows him as the friend of all beings and the receiver of every sincere offering finds peace. You are not alone. When you feel stressed, remember that you are cared for, and do your part with a trusting heart.
