Chapter 12 of 18 · 20 verses

The Path of Devotion

Krishna says the simplest path is to love and think of him with a steady heart. If that feels hard, practise. If practice is hard, do your work for his sake. If even that is hard, let go of the fruits of your work. Then he describes the qualities of the person he loves: kind, free from hatred, content, calm in praise and blame.

arjuna uvācha
evaṁ satata-yuktā ye bhaktās tvāṁ paryupāsate
ye chāpy akṣharam avyaktaṁ teṣhāṁ ke yoga-vittamāḥ

Arjuna asks: Some devotees always worship you with love, and others meditate on the formless and unseen. Which of them knows yoga better?

What Krishna meant

Arjuna is asking Krishna a question. Some people worship Krishna with love, and others meditate on the formless, unseen truth. Which group understands better? Arjuna wants a clear answer. In life, too, choose the way you can actually keep doing every day, not the one that only sounds grand.

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha
mayy āveśhya mano ye māṁ nitya-yuktā upāsate
śhraddhayā parayopetās te me yuktatamā matāḥ

Krishna says: Those who keep their mind on me and always worship me with deep faith, I consider them the best in yoga.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that people who fix their mind on him and worship with deep faith are the best in his eyes. The point is steady love and trust. In daily life, whatever you hold dear, give it your full attention, like a parent who is truly present while playing with a child.

ye tv akṣharam anirdeśhyam avyaktaṁ paryupāsate
sarvatra-gam achintyañcha kūṭa-stham achalandhruvam
sanniyamyendriya-grāmaṁ sarvatra sama-buddhayaḥ
te prāpnuvanti mām eva sarva-bhūta-hite ratāḥ

But those who worship the unseen, unchanging, formless, present everywhere, beyond thought, steady and fixed,

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins describing the other path, the worship of the Truth that has no shape. It cannot be seen, never changes, is everywhere and is beyond thought. This list is about a very big, quiet idea. Its practical use is that something steady and unchanging can be your anchor when everything else shakes.

sanniyamyendriya-grāmaṁ sarvatra sama-buddhayaḥ te prāpnuvanti mām eva sarva-bhūta-hite ratāḥ

controlling their senses and seeing all as equal, and caring for the good of all beings, they also reach me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says people on this formless path also reach him, if they control their senses, see everyone as equal and care for the good of all. The one quality that matters most is kindness to all. At work, try treating the cleaner and the manager with the same respect.

kleśho ’dhikataras teṣhām avyaktāsakta-chetasām
avyaktā hi gatir duḥkhaṁ dehavadbhir avāpyate

But the struggle is greater for those whose minds are set on the unseen, because the path of the unseen is hard for people who live in a body.

What Krishna meant

Krishna explains that the formless path is harder for people who live in a body, as we all do. It is not wrong, just tougher. Krishna means: pick a path that fits you as you are. Like learning to swim, it helps to start in shallow water, not the deep end.

ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi sannyasya mat-paraḥ
ananyenaiva yogena māṁ dhyāyanta upāsate

But those who give all their actions to me, hold me as their highest goal, and meditate on me with undivided love,

What Krishna meant

Krishna now describes the devotee he loves: someone who offers all their actions to him, treats him as the highest goal and thinks of him with undivided love. In daily life, do your work as an offering, with full heart, whether it is cooking, teaching or filing a report.

teṣhām ahaṁ samuddhartā mṛityu-saṁsāra-sāgarāt
bhavāmi na chirāt pārtha mayy āveśhita-chetasām

I soon lift them up from the ocean of birth and death, Arjuna, because their mind is fixed on me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna promises such devotees that he will soon lift them out of the ocean of worldly troubles, because their mind rests on him. Think of it as a hand reaching out to a tired swimmer. When you feel overwhelmed, steadying your mind on something you trust helps you breathe and keep going.

mayy eva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṁ niveśhaya
nivasiṣhyasi mayy eva ata ūrdhvaṁ na sanśhayaḥ

Put your mind only on me. Rest your thinking in me. After this you will live in me, without doubt.

What Krishna meant

Krishna tells Arjuna to place his mind and his thinking fully on him. Then he will live in Krishna's presence. The point is to give your best thoughts one steady home. When a worry keeps spinning, gently bring your mind back to one calm, good thought, again and again.

atha chittaṁ samādhātuṁ na śhaknoṣhi mayi sthiram
abhyāsa-yogena tato mām ichchhāptuṁ dhanañjaya

If you cannot keep your mind steady on me, then try to reach me through regular practice, Arjuna.

What Krishna meant

Krishna kindly says that if Arjuna cannot hold his mind steady all at once, he should practise, again and again. Nobody is perfect on day one. Like learning a musical instrument or a sport, small daily practice slowly makes the mind calmer and stronger.

abhyāse ’py asamartho ’si mat-karma-paramo bhava
mad-artham api karmāṇi kurvan siddhim avāpsyasi

If you cannot even practise, then make doing work for me your goal. Even by doing your work for my sake, you will reach perfection.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that if even practice feels too hard, Arjuna can simply do his work as a service to God. This keeps things simple and doable. In daily life, doing your job honestly, as though it were for someone you respect, can make even boring tasks feel meaningful.

athaitad apy aśhakto ’si kartuṁ mad-yogam āśhritaḥ
sarva-karma-phala-tyāgaṁ tataḥ kuru yatātmavān

And if you cannot even do that, then take shelter in me, control yourself, and give up the desire for the results of your work.

What Krishna meant

Krishna offers one more easy step. If Arjuna cannot even do that, he should trust, stay self-controlled and let go of worrying about the results of his work. Do your part well, then relax about the outcome, like preparing for an exam and not panicking about the marks.

śhreyo hi jñānam abhyāsāj jñānād dhyānaṁ viśhiṣhyate
dhyānāt karma-phala-tyāgas tyāgāch chhāntir anantaram

Knowledge is better than mere practice. Meditation is better than knowledge. Letting go of the fruits of action is better than meditation. Peace follows right after letting go.

What Krishna meant

Krishna gives a ladder: practice, then knowledge, then meditation, and above all letting go of the results of action, which brings quick peace. The key idea is that letting go calms the heart. If you did your best at work or in a family matter, stop replaying the outcome.

adveṣhṭā sarva-bhūtānāṁ maitraḥ karuṇa eva cha
nirmamo nirahankāraḥ sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ kṣhamī

Someone who hates no one, who is friendly and kind, free from "mine" and ego, the same in pain and pleasure, and forgiving,

What Krishna meant

Krishna begins a list of the qualities of a devotee he loves. This person hates no one, is friendly and kind, free from ego and "mine", steady in pain and pleasure, and forgiving. The most useful is forgiveness. Letting go of one old grudge can make your day lighter.

santuṣhṭaḥ satataṁ yogī yatātmā dṛiḍha-niśhchayaḥ
mayy arpita-mano-buddhir yo mad-bhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ

who is always content, self-controlled, firm in purpose, and has given mind and intellect to me, such a devotee is dear to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna continues the list. The dear devotee is always content, self-controlled, firm in purpose and gives their mind and thinking to God. The quality that helps most in daily life is contentment. Notice what you already have today, and feel thankful before wanting more.

yasmān nodvijate loko lokān nodvijate cha yaḥ
harṣhāmarṣha-bhayodvegair mukto yaḥ sa cha me priyaḥ

One who does not upset the world, whom the world cannot upset, and who is free from over-excitement, anger, fear and worry, is dear to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he loves the person who does not upset others, is not easily upset by others, and is free from wild excitement, anger, fear and worry. Next time someone provokes you, take a slow breath before replying. Staying calm protects both you and the other person.

anapekṣhaḥ śhuchir dakṣha udāsīno gata-vyathaḥ
sarvārambha-parityāgī yo mad-bhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ

One who expects nothing, is pure, skilled, calm, free from worry and does not start things out of selfish desire, such a devotee is dear to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the dear devotee expects nothing in return, is clean in heart, skilled, calm, free from worry and does not start things out of selfish greed. Being skilled and calm together is the lesson. Do your job well, without anxiety about what you will get from it.

yo na hṛiṣhyati na dveṣhṭi na śhochati na kāṅkṣhati
śhubhāśhubha-parityāgī bhaktimān yaḥ sa me priyaḥ

One who is neither overjoyed nor full of hate, who neither grieves nor craves, who lets go of both good and bad outcomes, and is full of devotion, is dear to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the dear devotee is neither carried away by joy nor by hate, does not grieve or crave, and accepts both good and bad outcomes with devotion. Life has ups and downs. When good news comes, enjoy it gently, and when bad news comes, do not let it break you.

samaḥ śhatrau cha mitre cha tathā mānāpamānayoḥ
śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣhu samaḥ saṅga-vivarjitaḥ

Equal to enemy and friend, in honour and insult, in cold and heat, in pleasure and pain, and free from attachment,

What Krishna meant

Krishna continues: the dear devotee is the same toward friend and enemy, honour and insult, heat and cold, pleasure and pain, and is free from clinging. The key lesson is not being ruled by praise and insult. Try not to let one rude comment ruin your whole day.

tulya-nindā-stutir maunī santuṣhṭo yena kenachit
aniketaḥ sthira-matir bhaktimān me priyo naraḥ

who takes blame and praise the same, is quiet, content with whatever comes, has no fixed home, steady in mind and full of devotion, that person is dear to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says the dear devotee takes blame and praise the same, speaks gently and little, is happy with whatever comes, has no fixed attachment to home, and stays steady. The simple use here is being thankful for what you get. A plain meal eaten calmly can be enough.

ye tu dharmyāmṛitam idaṁ yathoktaṁ paryupāsate
śhraddadhānā mat-paramā bhaktās te ’tīva me priyāḥ

Those devotees who follow this nectar of dharma exactly as I have told it, with faith and with me as their highest goal, are extremely dear to me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna ends the chapter. Those who follow this nectar-like teaching exactly, with faith and with God as their goal, are extremely dear to him. The point is to practise, not just admire. Pick one quality from this chapter, such as patience, and try it this week.
