Divine Glories

Arjuna asks how to think of the divine in daily life. Krishna describes how his greatness shows up everywhere: in the sun and moon, in the mountains and rivers, in the bravest, the wisest, the most beautiful. Wherever you see something splendid, it is a spark of his light.

yajñānāṁ japa-yajño ’smi sthāvarāṇāṁ himālayaḥ

Among great sages I am Bhrigu, among words I am the single syllable Om, among offerings I am quiet chanting, and among mountains I am the Himalaya.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is Bhrigu among sages, the single syllable Om among words, quiet chanting among offerings, and the Himalaya among mountains. The verse points to what is simple, still and steady as the highest. It matters because quiet moments of focus can be more powerful than loud effort.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is the peepal among trees, Narada among divine sages, Chitraratha among heavenly singers and Kapila among perfected souls. Each stands for the finest of its kind. It matters because it invites us to notice what is best and long-lasting, like a great old tree giving shade to all.

What Krishna meant

Krishna lists a divine horse, a great elephant and the king among humans as the best of their kinds. The verse shows that strength and grace are part of the divine pattern. It matters because a good leader, one who protects people, is worthy of real respect.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is the thunderbolt among weapons, the wish-fulfilling cow among cows, Kama among the causes of birth and Vasuki among serpents. These show power, generosity, life-force and strength. It matters because even natural desires, rightly used, have their place in life.

What Krishna meant

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is the beginning, middle and end of all creation, the knowledge of the Self among knowledge, and the honest search for truth in debate. It matters because in any argument, the goal should be finding what is true, not winning. Try it at home next time.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is the letter A among letters, the joining pair among compounds, endless Time, and the one who holds up everything, facing every side. The verse points to beginnings, unity and care for all. It matters because the best help is given to everyone without picking sides.

kīrtiḥ śhrīr vāk cha nārīṇāṁ smṛitir medhā dhṛitiḥ kṣhamā

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is death that takes all things, and also the source of what is yet to come, along with qualities like fame, prosperity, speech, memory, wisdom, steadiness and patience. It matters because endings and beginnings go together, and good qualities like patience and memory are worth growing.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is the Brihat-Sama among hymns, the Gayatri among poetic meters, Margashirsha among months and spring among seasons. These point to beauty, rhythm and fresh new growth. It matters because noticing beauty in song and season is a simple way to feel grateful.

dyūtaṁ chhalayatām asmi tejas tejasvinām aham
jayo ’smi vyavasāyo ’smi sattvaṁ sattvavatām aham

Among tricksters I am the dice game, among the radiant I am radiance, I am victory, I am determination, and I am the goodness of the good.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is the dice game among tricks, the radiance of the radiant, victory, determination and the goodness of the good. The verse shows that even risky things have power, but real strength is in determination and goodness. It matters because steady effort and good character last longer than luck.

vṛiṣhṇīnāṁ vāsudevo ’smi pāṇḍavānāṁ dhanañjayaḥ
munīnām apyahaṁ vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśhanā kaviḥ

Among the Vrishnis I am Krishna, among the Pandavas I am Arjuna, among sages I am Vyasa, and among wise poets I am Ushana.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is Krishna among the Vrishnis, Arjuna among the Pandavas, Vyasa among sages and Ushana among wise poets. By naming Arjuna, he shows that ordinary people can carry divine qualities. It matters because you, too, can bring something good into the world.

daṇḍo damayatām asmi nītir asmi jigīṣhatām
maunaṁ chaivāsmi guhyānāṁ jñānaṁ jñānavatām aham

Among those who punish I am the rod of justice, among those who seek victory I am wise strategy, among secrets I am silence, and among the knowledgeable I am knowledge.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says he is the rod of justice among those who punish, wise strategy among those who seek victory, silence among secrets and knowledge among the knowledgeable. It matters because fairness, careful planning and quiet restraint are strengths. Think before you speak, and plan before you act.

yach chāpi sarva-bhūtānāṁ bījaṁ tad aham arjuna
na tad asti vinā yat syān mayā bhūtaṁ charācharam

Whatever is the seed of all beings, that I am, Arjuna. Nothing, moving or unmoving, can exist without me.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that whatever is the seed of all beings is him, and nothing moving or unmoving can exist without him. Krishna means that the same life-force runs through all things. Example: seeing the same spark in a stranger, a pet and a tree makes it easier to treat them with care.

nānto ’sti mama divyānāṁ vibhūtīnāṁ parantapa
eṣha tūddeśhataḥ prokto vibhūter vistaro mayā

There is no end to my divine glories, Arjuna. What I have said is only a brief sample of them.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says there is no end to his divine glories and that what he described is only a brief sample. Krishna means that goodness around us is far bigger than what we can list. Example: when you feel low, remember that there is more good in the world than you can see at the moment.

yad yad vibhūtimat sattvaṁ śhrīmad ūrjitam eva vā
tat tad evāvagachchha tvaṁ mama tejo ’nśha-sambhavam

Whatever is glorious, beautiful or powerful, know that it comes from just a spark of my splendour.

What Krishna meant

Krishna says that whatever is glorious, beautiful or powerful comes from just a spark of his splendour. Krishna means that every wonderful thing we notice is a small glimpse of something greater. Example: a lovely sunset or a kind act can lift your mood, so take a moment to really notice it.

atha vā bahunaitena kiṁ jñātena tavārjuna
viṣhṭabhyāham idaṁ kṛitsnam ekānśhena sthito jagat

But what use is all this detail to you, Arjuna? I hold up this whole universe with just a small part of myself.

What Krishna meant

Krishna asks Arjuna what use all this detail is, since he holds up the whole universe with just a small part of himself. Krishna means that the divine is beyond all lists, so what matters is trust, not counting. Example: when a worry feels huge, remember it sits inside something much larger and steadier.
